Everyone had trap lines back then before animal rights activists drove the price of furs to nothing. My trap lines were usually around 3 miles and it was common to catch 15 to 20 racoons , a red fox or two and a bunch of muskrat every week. The price of a coon fur was $35 to $45 a fox $55 to $70 and muskrats $10 to $15. It was a lot of work but a 12 year old kid could make some serious cash. Now hardly anyone traps and the racoons end up dying from rabbies or smashed on the roadways. I can remember seeing a rabid racoon years ago while squirrel hunting but I was able to just walk around it. I told my father about it and he gave me hell for not shooting and burying it.

Those Kahrs are nice pieces, and they ain't cheap.
I sometimes use a PM9, much smaller.
But .45 is my favorite handgun caliber.
Personally, I think it could be difficult to hit a charging rabid coon with a pistol. Not because of being able to hit a moving target, but just dealing with the panic of knowing I have to hit that think quick.
I'd of rather had a shotgun.
