Don't worry.

The one nice thing about rc airplanes is ,

you never have to be jealous
About the plane the other guy just bought.

Why?

Because you know he'll probably crash it in a week!

You know what I'm talking about Dent! ;)

My first flight with my f27 striker,
Had a radio glitch an it went in at full throttle.
To top it off,as I was trying to do a test check after I fixed it, I accidentally shorted the speed controller and it went up in smoke :pinch:

Ya I don't get jealous much after that!

(Also because of the other events I won't mention hear)! ;) :pinch:

I always wanted a warbird...never got round to it....one day I will but the itch wont go....oh my last flight was with mt T-Bat (delta wing stunter) running an os max .45 (boy she had power) put her into a vertical climb and then the whole thing locked and controller did jack!
I watched it climb out of sight and then 3 mins later she came back to me the same way....about 90mph straight down....only 70 ft from the area I put her into a climb.....well the tail fin went past the prop snd she ended up as kindling lol....would I do it again? Hell yes. Good luck with your maiden dent.

Thats very nice!, I am a RC pitot too, but I am oriented to aerobatic and 3D fly. I like a lot this hobby! I think that Zuperman can improve a the controls of the airplanes in DF, maybe more sensitives and to use of rudder to fly doing knife!... lol :)

Ok so the first parts on order are starting to arrive......got these Gmade XD Piggyback shocks yesterday, they are fiddly to assemble but the quality is there in spades.....I went for shorter shocks to get the buggy as flat as possible, its being turned into an oddball oversized drift project....

They are fully adjustable for spring tension and for compression damping via an allen bolt on the piggyback unit. They are kimda adjustable for rebound but its while building that you make that decision, the pistons inside the damper can have two, three or four holes for letting oil through, thus adjusting piston return rates....

I wanted mine to sit flat so it would give a better c.o.g. for drifts. As you can see I lost 3/4" from the ride height and she sits there without sag and bounces beautifully.

cant wait for the fronts to arrive and all those alloy hop-ups.....shes gonna be bad!!!

Ive got a hot tip for getting burs off parts once clipped from parts trees....
1.clip off part with wire snips/side cutters/whatever you may call them.
2.heres the tip........

use a set of nail clippers (the folding metal ones with the pivoting mini file) to clip off the bur from the said part.....I only had to file three of 20 or 30 parts!!! Yup used thd file on the clippers, it saves time, looks neat and saves fingers/painting parts blood red lol.

3.fit part.

Hey Dent and everyone,

My first RC aircraft (in 19 years) is finally airborne!

This is a Blade Nano QX quad copter. With stabilizer gyros turned ON. The thing is a butt to fly without gyros! These quads are a little elusive to see orientation, as their frames are generally symmetrical. (There's a little body in the middle, and the nose was facing toward me on takeoff and landing. The front two motors have yellow blades. Hey I still know how to fly nose-in!)

Nice thing about a palm-sized copter is that it fits in my luggage. The transmitter's a little bulky though (Spektrum DX9). That's my hotel room. Nothing fragile to knock over, unlike at home.

Hey there's no emoticon for BIG GRIN. :woohoo:

Manfred

EDIT: Now I see what Gyro-off mode is for. While touchy in hover, it's a gas to be able to tip past what Stability Mode allows... but it's also risky for the airframe. I have yet to complete a flip with a catch into hover -- all I've done is flip and hit (the ground).

Manfred, Take a look at the Estes Proto x. Very small. I usually don't recommend anything that you can't get parts for but this thing is in the awsome range at $40. Just as easy to navigate around a room as the nano QX. I got my daughter one, It's been bounced off every wall and ceiling in the house... Still holding up.... I ended up getting 4. Mrs Dent had a few things to say....I can't repeat.... She did say she loved me at the end.... :cheer: ;)

... and now aircraft #2. 2 weeks, 2 planes, this ain't gonna go so well for Mrs. Manfred. Actually if this keeps up, this may not go so well for me :P

This is an E-flite Yak 54, in micro size with a 180 motor, 18" wing span, 2.5 *ounces*, and (most importantly) AS3X stabilization. We took it out to an industrial complex with some elbow room, to test out my flying and landing skills for possible use in the back yard. Umm, well, the wind was blowing a bit, and we won't be flying this little bugger in wind for a while. And definitely not at home, until I learn to harrier-land, and when there is NO wind.

Maybe should have sprung for the Carbon Cub first, but I think I'm committed now. I did hover, but it wasn't nose-high, it was just plain ol' hovering in a head wind. I don't think I ever made it to full throttle, the plane has so much power.

Oh no! What happened? I've been looking at fpv systems, maybe on a medium sized quad, but I'm so afraid of losing vid or radio control and dunking the thing. Plus it's not easy to fly in fpv view. What happened?

I just booked a holiday last week in turkey and will be doing some watersports and a bit of snorkeling while im there, I wanted a waterproof camera as my canon is not getting anywhere near water!, anyway I saw this, its proper name is the sj1000 and it is waterproof to 30m, takes stills in 12mp and vid in 1080p @ 30fps or 720p @ 60fps, if you go youtubing, search "sj1000 vs go pro" it has to be set with exposure at +1 to enhance the light to dark transition but at $80 - 90 its a very good buy.

..it comes with a heap of mounts...tripod, bar mount (for handlebars etc), suction cup (for car windows), belt mount with armband etc. It takes micro sd up to 32gb (best with a class 10 card). So I thought id use it pre-holiday as a rc car cam.

Ive wound my rear springs down and upped my damping rate to handle the weight over the rear wheels but it is now ready, just awaiting my new esc and then the hardcore tests begin........

Manfred, I got a tad to comfortable and was filming a big oak tree in the middle of our field. I got closer than expected, tilted back and punched power. At that moment a great big oak branch came into view and reached right out there and grabbed the quad.... I felt like I was actually crashing (goggles on). It's all repaired now and ready to go. I fiberglassed the inside of the quad's upper body and had a spare lower on hand.

Fox1, if your still around what's your FPV setup and approximate range?

Mad, Nice camera. I find that most of the cheaper camera's work better than some of the high end. I still have a stripped camera I use for RC that is easier and for some reason has less problems focusing...

repaired 350QX and FPV goggles

Sopwith almost ready to test fly

Dent,

You do realize that we will all be demanding that video, once you are over the trauma. I am picturing you out on a walk with Mrs. Dent, when suddenly a large oak tree comes into view, and you are rendered helpless, shivering in fear on the sidewalk.

Mrs. Dent: "What's wrong, dear?"

Mr. Dent: "Those branches... are... ALIVE!"

:P

Dent and Fox,

Are you guys running 2.4GHz RC and 5.8GHz FPV? How is the range with that setup? Is it a complete no-no to go behind something while FPV'g, either for video link or RC link reasons? I've seen videos from someone FPV'g a quad around their yard, and I would love to skulk the circle around our house but that would require going behind a structure.

Of course in any situation, except maybe a long flight away from home (which I'm not inclined to do for liability reasons), I'd range check the entire path. But that's only a loose predictor of what will actually happen with motors running.

Been doing a lot of research. FPV quad, this is really cool.

First flight from the back yard this morning, air was nice and still. Got some bigger wheels for the Yak to handle the paver cracks :P I still can't believe I'm RC'g a plane that's smaller than some rubberband powered planes we used to fly.

This video needs a magnifying glass to see - gopro trying to view a gnat. Definitely view in fullscreen and set to 1080p if you've got the bandwidth. Takeoff begs the question, where da heck am I gonna land? Fortunately, the Yak slows down nicely.

Galileo had it right, it takes a big plane just as much altitude as a small plane to fall in 3 seconds. So two mistakes high for a small plane makes it a speck. At some point, I will get braver and fly lower... maybe when my thumbs stop trembling.

Manfred, Like you I'm new to FPV. Here's what I've dug up. 5.8GHZ has less chance of interfering with my 2.4 radio system, 5.8GHZ picture fades faster than a 2.4 setup. I found this to be true with a quad distance ck. 5.8GHZ doesn't just fade as much as you loose picture almost instantly.
Like I said, I'm new. As I use the System I'll post more. I have an OSD board on order now (On Screen Display) so that I can set altitude and distance warnings. It will also have a direction to pilot indicator. The other thing I'm running into is that I wear glasses (farsighted). I have my FS Dominator's mounted in Ski Goggles but would like to fit a pair of old lenses or glasses into the body.... As alway's in this hobby we alway's tinker and like to show off our achievements....... :)

I hope you have rope ladders slung over the side there in that video. What a retreivel area for a lost plane...... Oh and nice landing on the USS Backyard.... looked like an Aircraft Carrier Landing...
Great Flying Manfred.

I'll see about sending you the Quad in tree Video. I need to Edit first and Time is my problem.... Then you can post... Don't hold your breath though.... :) I'm very scarce on DF anymore... ;)

Nice Video Manfred.

I'm a video editing idiot. My secret tool is Freemake Video Converter. Originally I got it to convert file types because one of my phones or cameras was giving me some weird unreadable format. But it's also got some really simple editing features - I open a video file from my GoPro, and it's easy to cut out sections and paste pieces together. Then I click on "fade transition" and it gives me that neat fade out/in between video chunks. Click another button to download to youtube, and I am a Tubin' Fool.

The hill behind the pool drops off at 1:2, steep enough to tumble down, but you don't get hurt. At the bottom, the yard transitions into the valley, which is thick and full of rattlers most of the year. That would be the No Retrieval Zone. Unless I get a big quad with a winch... naw I'd just hook a branch and lose the quad. But I COULD take some nice video from a quad, and at least see what I can't retrieve.

I had four landings this morning, only one of which stayed wheels-down. But it's well worth it being able to walk out the back door and fly! Just not sure whether my skills will improve enough before this plane becomes a rumpled bag of foam.

I haven't flown this much in 20 years!

Manfred, I think you need to check out the Blade 350QX or the new 200QX Quad, I have 2 350's to carry my GoPro and they will do aerobatics. The 200 is new and I have only seen video online.
I was very Iffy on Quads at first but as I got to flying them I found them as much fun as planes. It's actually a mix of Heli and plane.
I think you would really benifit from a quad with your limited landing area. I only suggest the 350 because I have one (2). There are many others out there.

The 350 comes with a GoPro camera mount.
