Here is one that also caught my eye from Banana Hobby, a 4 CH Freewing Flight Design RC Trainer Airplane RTF - 47" WS, 5 servos, $169.

I like the flight videos on it - they call it a trainer but with the flat dihedral I doubt it.

The 'bug' has set in -

WOW! THAT LOOKS LIKE FUN!
It is. Yet, they haven't shared the tears & heartbreak. Not to mention the safety issues.

No auto stabilization - Pete of BH is a really good pilot so he makes it look stable and easy - one can also rig it for flaps, not sure how that is done - separate servos in each wing half.

I liked the final construction aspect, sort of 'screwed together', not sure how it would look after after a cartwheel or two... (no rubber bands to pop off)

As Pete says, some think it is ugly - me, I like the looks.

Seems like BH gets mixed reviews but are trying harder lately.

Boooomer (you're like a sonic boom when playing DF!)

It is an electric - comes with everything you need - go to Banana Hobby and check out the video on it.

As to landing a plane, as they say (or used to) any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

For R/C, at least for me, doing a nice feathered landing is always a highlight of a flight. I love to have it fly past me and then watch the landing from the rear and do the flare. It is the same in real life - I used to fly sailplanes and landing a sailplane is a delight as it's glide ratio is so good (unless you are in some farmer's field) (with ground chuck holes).

I also have a simulator coming that gives you a R/C transmitter connected to the computer and on screen you can do R/C flight not unlike DF.

As I mentioned at an earlier point on this thread, you should be able to find a decent R/C sim to download for free. I use FMS(Flying Model Simulator). Windows XP is the latest compatible OS that it mentions but my brother and I run it on our windows 7 computers, I don't remember if we had to change anything to make it run or not. I don't care much for the models that come with it but there are tons of user made add ons that are free to download also. If you happen to find a plane that you like the looks of, you can swap/modify the PAR/physics file to make it fly how you like. I fly mine with either the keyboard or a dual joystick game pad but if you have a USB interface cable you can connect your R/C transmitter to it but no matter what you use to fly it you will still have a better idea of what to do with the real thing when you get it. Oh, I almost forgot to add that you can add wind on FMS gusts and all. Its not the most accurate model sim visually (can't see control surfaces move) but it help me stay sharp.

Re simulators

I just received RealFlight Basic (RFB) today and have been playing around with it and the plane models. It is quite nice and realistic. That said, I am not totally happy with the models and display. RFB has not been updated since 09 so lags what is out there now.

So I have just tried ClearView ( ClearView R/C Flight Simulator ) using the controller that came with RFB (looks and feels like a real R/C transmitter). ClearView has a free trial that you can get.

I am very impressed with ClearView - it, for me, seems more realistic than RFB for the two planes I tried. I like the visuals better too, especially the view of the plane while flying. More like it looks when out on the field.

ClearView has a much larger selection of planes and the trainer I last tried reminded me of my beginning R/C flying years ago. Amazing graphics - got some good chuckles from it too when I clipped a tree. (or two...)

The cost for ClearView(CV) is $40 and you can get a R/C transmitter controller for $15 or so. I think this is a very good investment for anyone starting R/C flying. I remember my first flights: fly/crash repair then repeat process. I had the most beat up plane at the field but balsa was easy to repair.

My next issue is to select the plane in CV that best fits my new Nieuport that is coming in a few days.

I was so impressed with CV that I bought the full version. Lots of bells and whistles.

Fun...

As I look and feel the scars on 3 fingertips obtained when I made my first electric from scratch, I wish I had seen this first. If you have a few moments...

One of the best hobbies going.
