La Fayette Squadron is a unit of American volunteers formed in 1916 under French command in order to come to the aid of France during the First World War. It was named in memory of the Marquis de La Fayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War. These American volunteers, foreigners therefore, were registered with the Foreign Legion. The colors of the Legion, green and red, appear in the insignia of the squadron.

Not all American pilots belonged to the Lafayette Squadron, a large number of American volunteers served in the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Naval Air Service, and the Royal Air Force.
The US was officially neutral at first. American public opinion was against this war.
The authorities' objective was to show American heroism in action. Public opinion had to be turned in favor of going to war alongside the English.
