La Fayette Squadron is a unit of American volunteers formed in 1916 under French command in order to come to the aid of France during the First World War. It was named in memory of the Marquis de La Fayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War. These American volunteers, foreigners therefore, were registered with the Foreign Legion. The colors of the Legion, green and red, appear in the insignia of the squadron.
