As real pilots, we'd be awful. With modern planes, we'd have to adjust to new technology. With old planes, guns were inaccurate, unreliable, and short ranged. It got freezing cold in the cockpit. Head on fighting would often kill both participants, due to the range issue. Hook up a .50 cal belt fed full auto sniper rifle, though, and you might have something. :P

And no chutes or even a tarmac runway, solid tyres, a leather helmet and foggy goggles and judged how high or low you were by eye, not to mention easily blocked fuel lines. Ah the joy of flying in 1914/18. Yet they were gentlemen to a man on all sides.
