Would you mind sharing your thoughts humankind's evolution? Such as why is the most important part of our body (other than our heart) suspended on such a fragile frame as our neck?

Brilliant minds want to know.

Team New Zealand launched their AC72 this week it has hydrofoils and can maintain speeds over 30 knots
I can't wait for the next Americas cup in frisco when they sail those big boats at those speeds it will be carnage !

Ah, well -- it's simple. The neck is a tool our body uses for surveying our surroundings. It allows us to (in a hunter/gatherer sense) run whilst looking around/behind us. Without the neck, we would be very vulnerable to all sorts of things. Heh, kind of like how Batman was with his original armor (in the Dark Knight) which really limited his mobility. It's essential that if you're going to be the top predator -- you have to be able to look around very quickly.

Could you imagine how hilarious/awful it would be if we all ran around with stationary necks? If we wanted the 360 on whatever environment we're in -- we would have to stop and turn our bodies 360 degrees. That would waste both calories, time and patients. :P

Our bodies do however protect the most vital structure of all -- the brain. I've seen all sorts of head trauma/things that shouldn't be inside the skull. You'd be surprised how tough the human skull is.

Besides, try naming another animal that doesn't have a armored neck (besides the armadillo). It's just essential if you want to survive in the wild.

tl;dr Thick "armor"/bones is fine for both your skull or ribs, because both do not move much. We need a flexible neck in order to do things like spot predators before they can get us. Or spot prey animals so that we can bash their heads in with rocks (in the most primal sense).

And there you have it.

:EDIT: I just wanted to add -- humans (and all animals with necks) instinctively protect the neck. This is why your chin naturally drops a bit as you put your dukes up before a fight. There are loads of other examples -- but that will do just fine. I hope this all answered your question in a timely manner. :D

Well, some experts on the matter ( can't think of the word ) believe we were prey animals ourselves...
Though I personally believe that, if anything, we devolved...
We have no natural instincts, except to run, which doesn't work, seeing as most predator animals get at 15 mph+, little natural body covering ( in the form of fur or hair ) for the winter, and our eyesight is significantly less than other animals...

The new boats are bigger and FASTER! The couple of tests have been going on here amazing! Before I had my operation I sailed on a couple of the ones you see in the video. What a thrill! There is a test boat here now..hope to go out soon. Will get pics/vids.

Also, the head on the neck makes a good naive line:
The man, he is the head of the family, but the woman, she is the neck. And she turns the head any way she wants to.

Every creature -- no matter where it is in a animal-like hierarchy (including us at the top) will always be at risk for being attacked if we're away from our own homefront. The ocean is not our home, neither is deep jungle. We all adapt to the environment we're put within. This includes everything from how many calories our metabolisms burn in order to sustain our normal body temperatures, your blood-oxygen levels changing due to increased/decreased barometric pressure, etc. All us humans do is adapt and move around because we're never happy with what we have. We're essentially nomads.

Speaking of barometric pressure -- it's a common misconception that oxygen levels decrease at higher altitudes. When in fact; it's the pressures that cause you lack of oxygen. You need a certain amount of pressure during inspiration in order for the oxygen to enter the blood stream through the alveolar sacs located in your lungs.

I'm not positive but I believe it's 23% of the atmosphere is oxygen. These levels do not fluctuate very much and therefor -- the same amount of oxygen is present in all areas of the atmosphere. It's only the pressures which change; hence why a person who lives at sea level will feel sick after coming to the inland for about two days. They aren't used to the lack of oxygen in the bloodstream.

So yeah, next time you hear someone saying oxygen decreases as you get higher -- now you know. :D

I've always thought about how pathetic humans are physically compared to animals. We are comparably weak, have no offensive/defensive body parts (other than punching and kicking), and we aren't very fast.

Out advantage that puts us on the top is our brain, which makes us very advanced thinkers. That, and our opposable thumbs. The two allows us to create/operate complex tools that make up for our disadvantages, and then some. Can't fight? Use a gun. Can't move fast? Try a 800 MPH jet.

Though I did read somewhere that humans are naturally built for long-distance running. I guess that's true, most people can run at least 5K without stopping.

Yeah, I totally agree with what you've said.

Humans were meant to run even faster -- we've just gotten lazy overtime. Well, some anyways. :P

Some of the first explorers of southern America reported they often saw Native Americans literally chasing down buffalo by foot. They often studied how the coyote hunted (and wore their skins for camoflauge) and thus would go after the older or weaker buffalo. They still ran extremely fast however.

It was only until many horses escaped and became wild that the Native Americans adapted hunting on horseback.

Humans are pretty badass. At least those who keep themselves in shape.

For anyone reading this whose in their 30's (or even older) -- run a mile everyday. Can't run? Do some sort of exercise. I can't tell you how many patients I have who come in and say "Gosh...it was just yesterday I could do 3 reps of 20 pushups with ease. I'm so...out of shape."

Work out everyone -- even if it isn't to gain muscle. Cardio does wonders for the body and psyche (that runners high, amirite? ;))

In early august I went on a bike trip totaling 83 miles. 25 the first day 12 the next then 30 then 16 the last day. Does that count as exercise.
