Good people of dogfight, im in a quandry.....my boss has a model thats a little bit special, it is unbuilt and he wishes to sell it. The model is a fokker dr1 and has so much detail it is incredible - pistons that move in the bores when the prop is turned, a wood prop, timber skeleton and canvas that has to be shrunk onto the body and wings, all the wires are there and even the controlls actually function from the stick and pedals! The thing i love is the size......it has a wingspan of 6feet 2 inches!!!. Obviously i dont NEED it but should i buy it anyway ??? Let me know your thoughts.

for anyone who doesnt know - this is the dr1!!!

Not doing much except therapy...
That's about $850 US right? How many exist? Can it be converted to electric to fly? I have spent much more on RC gliders. The detail is what doesn't exist on most models. Do you have a special place to display it?

a place to display it? Not at the moment but within the next three years il be moving to a bigger house so i could put it in the loft with a few other models maybe. It is a run of only 500. So it is rare. My head says no you dont need it but my heart says yes lol

Do you like building model airplanes? I've done alot of model building in my time and this looks to a big project. Of course I like to fly what I build and looking at the materials I don't think it could be converted to an R/C model.

The interesting thing about the DR1 is that it was a response to the Allied Sopwith Triplane. The Sopwith Triplane was quickly shelved when the superior Camel was rolled out, but the Germans were sufficently impressed to build their own. In fact many different triplane prototypes were built in Germany and this was the best of the lot.

With essentially four wings, this airplane produced a huge amount of lift, which gave it a great rate of climb, and with its short span and rotary engine was very agile, but with four wings (4th small wing on landing gear) the airplane was very draggy and slow. The slow speed and the fact that these started falling apart during high g maneuvers in dogfights spelled the eventual end of this aircraft. They were great dogfigthers in their time though in the hands of the right pilot.

From my experience, with that quality of kit, careful building and "used" paint job, to make it museum quality, it would be worth several thousand dollars. DO NOT think of radio control! It is a static display. Offer $500 and some extra hours at work and see how it goes.

Good luck!

Canvas and timber...way too heavy to ever be a viable R\C airplane. Just make sure you're committed to the time and effort it's going to take to build it. :)

I with Paul on this one. Buy it but don't RCify it! And take your time to do it right! That's a big model and details will make a huge difference so do it right and enjoy it! Also, definitely lowball offer wouldn't hurt. That's not an easily time to find a buyer for so maybe he will take half?!

I don't think it's the best ideas to put your financial decisions into the hands of this forum. Especially cause there's so many kids, but...
850 bucks?? Holy fricken gosh! That's the cheapest plane ever! But make sure it works

take sheet metal, fold/ beat down the edges in a way where they cant cut you, and put that behind the canvis, then you might be able to sell it as a one of a kind baby/young kid's toy, nevermind.

If you're into models -- go ahead.

I enjoy building models. But I usually give them away for free to kids at hospitals or veterans. I don't want the things collecting dust. :)
