I have been looking for some of the better movies about WW1 dogfighting and would like input from others here. I did do forum search and didn't find much. I buy 99% of my movies (DVD & Bluray) off of Amazon.
So far, I am considering "Hell's Angels", "Von Richthofen & Brown", " The Blue Max", "The Dawn Patrol", "Man, Moment, Machine: The Red Baron & The Wings of Death" (History Channel Documentary).
I already have "Flyboys", which I have not watched in a couple of years. Some people complain about excessive CGI in that one.

Read about my dad. He was the pilot for most of those. "Hell's Angels" was his "big break" movie. He help to design the cameras & the flying style to use them to their best advantage. See him on utube.
He was known as the "Hollywood Pilot". You'll see why.
Unfortunately, you will see him die, too. But, he died doing what he loved. Flying.

Buy "The Great Waldo Pepper" it's post war mostly but has great flying in it plus a Sopwith vs Fokker dogfight at the end.

There was a Richtofen biopic a few years ago, I can't recommend it because I opted out as soon as I read that they'd written a face to face relationship of some sort between MvR and Brown! Ridiculous. Flyboys is a mess; a few good period moments here and there, some nice shots of Nieuport 17's on the flightline in the mist...but a total blowoff of the actual history of the Lafayette Escadrille with none of the real pilots portrayed and, yes, tons of laughable CGI. The Blue Max is excellent if you don't mind a central character who's a complete jerk. The gold standard titles are still Wings, Hell's Angels, both versions of The Dawn Patrol and, I agree, The Great Waldo Pepper. It really is the best of the bunch despite being set post-war. The depiction of Ernst Udet is brilliant. There's a ton of others from the early sound years like The Eagle and the Hawk, Ace of Aces, even Charles Nungesser himself starred in a silent film called The Sky Raider while over here doing airshows and stunt flying in Wings. Depending on how powerful your computer is you should look into the game Rise of Flight. It's an amazing piece of work, as close as you'll get to a sense of what it must have been like to fly in The Great War.

Paul, your father was a remarkable flyer, I'm well familiar with his work. It's a pleasure to have you in the Dogfight community, to which I'm relatively new myself. I'll look forward to seeing you climb through the ranks! Meanwhile thanks for sharing the info about your dad with all of us, he and his colleagues from the early sound era in Hollywood were some crazy heroic pilots well worth reading about.

Thank all of you guys so much. Your invaluable input is greatly appreciated.

I have always been very interested in WW2 history but, since becoming involved in the Dogfight game, one thing has led to another and now I want to know more and more about WW1 and the courageous folks who fought in it.

I certainly envy you Paul for having such a rich family legacy!

Thanks and I did find & add that movie, "Biggles - Adventures In Time", to my Amazon wish list. I am hoping I can find it for a better price. Currently priced at $59 so it really must be a classic! In the meantime, I will try to rent it from local Hastings.

Oh, "Hell's Angels" is already on the way. :)

While not a WW1 movie, "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours 11 minutes", captures the early flying days (pre WW1) - lots of real flying with replica aircrft, great humor, and a fun story. Got me into ultra-lights for a while - they came close to the same flying experience.

Thank you. I had never heard of it. It was a fun, action packed movie. The music was good, too.
Premise is off-beat, which made it more interesting.
Thanks, again.

I'm astonished that nobody has mentioned Wings , which has the distinction of winning the very first Oscar for Best Picture in 1929. Not the easiest film to find but check it out.
