Hi Stuart,
Yep sucky way to start a day. But you are a good guy for not doing it yourself.
If you don't already do this, here's my general workflow to maximize my chances.
- When I spawn, first thing I do is hit the brakes. Doesn't matter what game.
- If I'm in a tippy plane, I throttle up halfway or as much as I can without nosing over.
- Some of the planes have great ground handling and can go up to full throttle.
- Then look around. Radar. Sides, back, and up/back. Anyone on a strafing run?
- If so, I sit tight and watch. There's some timing to it. In fact, it's all timing.
- Release brake and jump into the air.
- Turn hard. Maybe fake one way and go hard the other way.
- If the spawner is low, I use a building corner to cover part of my turn.
- Lose the bomb at a safe height
- If I've timed it right, I'm behind him, or at least not in front of him.
From there, it's just a turning fight, because I've more or less turned it from a spawning situation into a turning fight. He has the advantage while I'm getting up to speed, but since throttling is such a key part of turning fights anyway, it shouldn't take but a few seconds to be in the range of speed thay I want.
People who are great at turning fights will have the odds on their side. But IME, the true campers are not turning aces, probably because they spend so much flying time spawnkilling instead of refining dogdighting skills. Or they have hit a wall skillwise, and resort to spawnkilling to get their jollies. Either way, when I see a camper, I smile inside because if either of those is true, the odds are on MY side.
And then there are the times I get killed. Oh well!
What gets my goat are people who are aces at dogfighting, but get bored and take it out on othera (including me! I am good, but not THAT good) by camping and spawnkilling. These days I never get to stick around to see if I would ultimately prevail, because my game typically quits after a few minutes. These bored guys lack character, and that's my only consolation.
Anyway, hope this helps you or somebody out there.
Manfred
