I've exchanged some messages with Snidley and GenJack. Here are the highlights, and Snid and Jack are on board:
- I was about to lock the Truth thread myself. It had disintegrated into a slog-fest between Bzerk and McNeil. I would have waited a little longer than GenJack did, mostly because I typically like the line to be crossed, trampled, and pulverized before sticking my neck out there. In this case, I was waiting for them to post some really obvious abuse.
- I don't think GenJack locked it before the line was crossed. The posts were getting personal, and that's enough. Like Kevy said, we're pretty lax around here compared with standard internet forum guidelines. GenJack saw it and capped it. I've got no problem with that. Ya'll feel free to disagree though.
- A more to-the-point moderation post might have sounded more like "This thread has disintegrated into personal jabs, mostly between just two people. It is locked. Please take the discussion to PM's if you want to make it personal. Or feel free to continue in another thread but keep the discussion civil." (Well, that's easy to think up after all the smoke has cleared.)
- But GenJack locked the thread and stated an opinion of the topic, which left him open to criticism for bias, and impacted his credibility as a 3rd party concerned about the forum's civility. Basically I totally agree with his action, but his communication had much more than was needed.
On a side note, I felt that Parrot's post was a little generous, correcting himself and saying that it had been civil. But Parrot is a generous guy. He paid me a lot to post this.

If you all feel compelled, someone can re-start a thread on the pros and cons, yin and yang, doe's and oats, of 2nd accounts, or whatever. Anything that CAC or any squad or individual has done is fair game. Freedom of speech and all that. Just keep it non-personal, no matter how much you think the other person is advocating idiocy. It's good practice for real-life, always being ready to say "ok I hear you, and I disagree" instead of saying "Jane you ignorant xxxx."
