Hey Loonies. Sorry, but I'm not very active, but I've been very active lol. I have deployed to Afghanistan as a Military Advisor to the UN. Good money but no weapons. WTF was I thinking?!? Anyway, I made it to Jalalabad around ten days ago after a week-long marathon via UAE and Kabul. The drive from Kabul to Jalalabad was spectacular. Snow capped mountains and steep valleys - even the occasional abandoned Soviet T-55 tank as a reminder to those who might follow.
The UN base here in Jalalabad is small but secure, nestled between the provincial governor’s compound and the regional police HQ. We are inside a converted government building. Our accommodation is very comfortable with gardens, verandas and orange trees, which makes it all very nice and green, but basically we are inside a 10m high blast wall which makes it more like a prison. We only venture out when on liaison and observation tasks (using armoured Land Cruisers). There is no shopping, sight seeing or leisure activities. We have 18 foreign UN staff here and 20 guards. A few days a week an old guy cooks for us all, and essentials are delivered, but for the most part we cook for ourselves. Veggie curry and afghan bread last night – Not bad. Our Gurkha security guards, far more capable than most, slaughtered a sheep this morning and have invited me to dinner tonight. Can't say no - it's a cultural thing.
The Afghan election is on 05 Apr, and the Taliban fighters are out in force to disrupt the process by all means possible. This base has already been attacked and, as I type, our UN base In Kabul is getting whacked. The next few weeks will be a bumpy ride, but I feel reasonably relaxed and confident, though never complacent.
Have a great weekend. Keep the squad honest and don't ever be pushed around by people who think they're important.
