1) Pull the lever. Pray the rail worker has knowledge enough to leave the tracks in time.
2) Do nothing, By pushing the man on the tracks I am committing murder. By doing doing nothing there is a chance some of the 5 may survive, but I will not have murdered them.
3) I just finished a wonderful meal where the waiter gave tremendous service. I leave a 20% tip and trust in the individual to do what is right with their earnings.
4) I politely ask the gentleman if he has dropped the money. If he answers with a lie it his bad karma. If it is not his and I am in a business I leave it with the manager.

These choices are not perfect but they allow for the best of outcomes, morally that is. B)

I've decided to leave it open but give my answers now, that way, everyone who wants can reply

1. I'd probably hesitate at first but would bring myself to pull the lever

2.this one is challenging, pushing the person is murder but not doing anything is nearly social taboo.
Plus, outside of games, i'm known to give into my compassionateness, I couldn't live with myself if I killed someone, or if I let people I could have saved die, either would haunt my conscience forever. I couldn't put my friends and family through the grief of my death, though. I don't know what I would do here.

3. $50 isn't much, i'd leave $25, if only to know that I made someone happy.

4. This is easy for me, one halloween, I looked down on the sidewalk and saw a $20, thinking I scored free cash, I went to pocket it when I looked up and saw a guy standing only 3ft away talking to a friend (if I remember rightly, he could have been on his phone)
I asked him if the money was his and he said it wasafter checking his wallet, so I gave i t to him and walked on with a happier conscience, of course if he said no , I would have asked around a bit, and if no one claimed it, I would have gone home $20 richer.

Social taboo, maybe. However by locking out all other options I believe that to be the best option. Sucks but you didn't put those 5 people on the "Train Tracks". They have enough public service announcements these days about staying off the tracks that they are at fault.

BTW thanks for making me have a very deep, moral and ethical train of thought at a place where I am trying to unwind and have some fun. B) :cheer:

This really does make you stop and examine your own morality and realize there are times that you really have a no win situation.

Someone actually did a moral experiment similar to #4. He went to a mall armed with a 100 dollar bill. He went around and asked all kinds of people if they dropped it. Each and every one of them said no.

And if we're on the topic of moral experiments, here's another one I saw on TV. A man walks up to a random guy on the street and hands him a suitcase. He tells tells him that it is filled with plenty of cash, and he needs him to watch it for a few moments. The man leaves while a camera crew secretly watches the watcher. He does not attempt to leave, and he doesn't tamper with the suitcase at all, even after 10 min.

I guess humanity isn't as bad as we all thought, huh?
